"OF A KIND"

Thirty years gone.
New town, newer.
A fence beckons,
Tugging at a memory.
Wondering at the sameness,
Or is the memory
Playing tricks.
It does lately.

Searching photos,
The fences almost the same.
A hundred miles apart.
"LOGGING ROAD"

Saturday, weather permitting,
Walked her 32 acres.
Myriad of logging roads,
Crisscrossed the land.
Never one to lose her way,
Or tire of the trek.

A check for bees, then
Stopped for lunch on the
Old rotted log.
Moving down the road
To another memory.
"MAINE HOUSE"

A spot away.
Lived here two summers.
I was from away,
Not that it mattered to me.
I've been from away
Half of my life.
Wanderlust it's called
In my book;
Soaking up the same sun
From another place.
We all call it home,
Whether it's away from,
Or from away.

"EMMA'S CHAIR"

Unable to weed her garden now,
She sits in the
 Late day sun.
The century-old
Flower bed,
Needing care,
Turns itself back to
Wild asters and
Queen Ann's lace.
Smiling, content in her 90th
Year, she notes the change,
And quietly continues with
Her plans for next year's
Garden.

"WEEDS"

Long before me did she come
To the field.
With a name appropriate
To her surroundings.
With no house or road
Nearby.
No one to tell the tale.
Years later, remembering,
I ponder
And keep safe her secret.
"FOOTHILLS"

Eighty-five and going strong.
Abby, a fit name for the strength
Seen in her face. Walked
Four miles to town and back,
Every day in the same shoes,
Scarf on her head.
I offered a ride on days
Inclement.
A polite woman she was in her
Refusal.
Alone in my truck, with thoughts
Of my own.
Twenty years, and I still see
Her face.

"CIVIL REST"

Red River Campaign.

Southwest of Vicksburg,
We were.
So poorly planned
And far from home.
Can sit around here
And talk about it
All these years.
Change nothin',
It surely won't.
